Well that sounds ominous, doesn't it. "DISSENT AMONG SCIENTISTS!" Yes, that's certainly a damning headline. Especially for those of us who want the human race to avoid a mass die-off along with the various species we're driving to extinction.
Or it would be, if it were true.
The BBC did not quote a single scientist objecting to the current draft of the IPCC Report.
They quoted Richard Tol, an economist at the University of Sussex.
There are two problems with the BBC's alarmist headline:
Problem 1: Tol is not a scientist.
Problem 2: Tol is an unhinged loon.
He thinks that the impact of climate change will be "Relatively Small." He thinks that any proposal to take major steps to deal with it is preposterous.
He's one of the folks that the Republican Party and the oil industry roll out every time they need someone with intellectual punch on their side.
But the fact is, Tol does not have the intellectual background or the skills to analyze the science.
Just the economics. And he has consistently disagreed with scientists over the work they are doing in their own fields.
The point is that there is no dissent among scientists. This is just another instance of the anti-scientific loons trotting out to disagree, just like they always do.
But writing an honest story about how Tol is out in right field shouting at clouds again over an IPCC report isn't going to generate ad revenue for the BBC.
Hence the lies.
