The Mayor in a rural South Carolina town fired the local police chief because she was an out and proud Lesbian.
According to local media, a board of the city government found that she was fired for a number of reasons, none of which had to do with being a lesbian. "Questioning the authority of the mayor" was one of the reasons given for her firing, along with "Allowing city council meetings to become disorderly."
So the Mayor's Cronies in the city government asserted his position that Crystal Moore was fired for, essentially, not being the Mayor's bootlicker, rather than for being a Lesbian.
This despite the fact that the Mayor told local media:
“I would much rather have — and I will say this to anybody’s face — somebody who drank and drank too much taking care of my child than I had somebody whose lifestyle is questionable around children. … I’m not going to let two women stand up there and hold hands and let my child be aware of it. And I’m not going to see them do it with two men neither.”
The town responded by holding a referendum, voting 2 to 1 to strip the Mayor of most of his powers, and give those powers to the city council. The City Council plans to Reinstate Chief Crystal Moore on their first day in office, after the votes are certified on Friday.
I bet Mayor Bullard wishes that he could fire his voters, for questioning the authority of the mayor. Especially when he thought that by being the Mayor, he was essentially a king.
Apparently, Bullard was following the rulebook that a lot of other local governments have been following. Restricting public comments to three minutes, running the town like a dictator, ignoring the city council. And the town decided that they weren't going to put up with it.
Council member Lutherine Williams:
Words cannot describe what it’s been like trying to work with him. We’d have never had any reason to even ask for the referendum, but he’s impossible. Everything with him is dictatorship. It’s his way or no way. Every council member supports Crystal 100 percent. If we could put her back to work tonight, we would, but we’ll have to wait until the vote’s certified.Don't give up on the south, even the Rural Deep South. There are people with working brains in every part of this country, and if we can get them to the ballot, they'll outnumber the fools. Especially when the fools believe they can run this country like a dictatorship, instead of a Democracy. We’ve just taken all the clothes off the mayor. He’s naked. Once this vote is certified, he has no power. We getting ready to make him raise his hand [to speak at council meetings] and maybe we’ll give him three minutes like he’s done the citizens of Latta.
