The National is a pro-independence newspaper. Let’s not dither about who they are. They’re nationalists. They’re often accused of being mouthpieces for the SNP. They believe that Scotland ought to be an independent country. The day when the first Syrian refugees arrived in Glasgow Airport, this was the sentence that greeted them from Scottish News Stands:

“To the first refugees fleeing War-Torn Syria who will arrive in Glasgow Airport today, we’d just like to say: Welcome to Scotland.” An editorial argued that the refugees deserved a warm welcome, and stated that “refugees from Syria are fleeing the very same terrorism of which our French neighbours were targets last weekend.”
These people are Nationalists.
These people are capital-N Nationalists, and they recognize that welcoming Syrian refugees is their duty to themselves and to the human species.
So to all of the those, all around the world, who are terrified of Syrian refugees, I’d just like to ask: what the hell is wrong with you?
Is it Cowardice? Is it Racism?
I really do not understand what drives someone to look at a human tragedy, where ordinary people are fleeing an apocalyptic, genocidal conflict, and to respond by trying to send refugees back into the jaws of death.
Seriously. What the hell is wrong with these people?
